Laminar Flow, Biological Safety and Fume Hood Cabinets

A laminar flow cabinet, laminar flow chamber, or laminar flow hood is an enclosure that uses a fan to force air through a HEPA or ULPA filter and provide clean air to the work area free of particles up to 0.1 microns.

The vertical laminar flow hoods are highly specialized equipment that allow to obtain a sterile and safe area for any need that is required within a laboratory. They constitute a space; which, through a specific air treatment; allows working in an area with strict control of non-road particles. This type of equipment is used for certain processes where extreme contamination control is needed.

Typically, these systems are used for microbiological control procedures; packaging process, sterile filling; but in no way should they be used for processes involving strains of contaminating biological agents; whether they are known or not.

How does a laminar flow hood work?

How does a fume hood work?

A hood or hood in laboratories are an effective means of capturing flammable, irritant, corrosive, carcinogenic vapors, etc. to prevent personnel exposures and avoid their dissemination in the laboratory atmosphere. When the hatch is down, the cab is also a physical barrier that protects the operator from hazards such as splashes, aerosols, fires, and minor explosions.

Fume hoods are a type of ventilation system with the primary function of protecting the user against exposure to chemical vapors, gases, dust, and aerosols. They also function as physical barriers between reagents and the laboratory, offering protection against inhalations, spills of hazardous substances, reactions, and fire.

Biosafety Cabinet - Airflow Demonstration

The biological safety cabinet represents a primary containment barrier that allows safe work with biological agents. It is a device designed to prevent the escape of bioaerosols from the work area and, therefore, protects people and the environment from possible exposure to biological agents.

There are three types, known as: class I, class II and class III. Laminar flow booths designed exclusively to protect the product are not considered CSB. Next we are going to mention the main characteristics of working with booths at each of these security levels:

Features

The Class I biosafety cabinet does not protect the product from contamination because clean room air is constantly entering the work area.
As a partial containment unit, the Class I biosafety cabinet is suitable for working with low to moderate risk agents (biosafety levels 1, 2 and 3) where there is a need for containment, but not for product protection.
